One of my favorite things about the turn of seasons is the new things to do. In the Spring, it may be planting new flowers in the garden or going to see the tulips in bloom. In the summer, it may be hiking, swimming, all sorts of outdoor activities. You get the idea. In the Fall, this year, what I love is that the kids get back into team sports outdoors – rain or shine.
Cody and Cayden (father and son)
This Sunday, it was shine all around as my four year old grandson had his first flag football practice and then game. Practice is a misnomer. There were communication glitches and the parents arrived at noon, but the coach didn’t get there till 1. So a couple parents stepped up and started working with the boys to show them how to run and catch the ball. However no one explained to them the basics of how to play the game. If they knew how, it was from playing at home, I’m sure.
When I got there, the kids were already out out on the field, and Cayden saw me coming up. He started waving at me, and I could hear him tell the boy next to him, “My Damma’s here. That’s my Damma over there!” In unison now: Awwwww. (He loves his grandma and melts her heart every time.)
Cayden was fascinated with his blue mouth guard. I guess all the kids were fascinated with theirs. Even this other boy was standing around playing with his too. They look like a couple of really sweet little dorks. LOL.
Lined up…
Practicing catching the ball.
After an hour of “practicing”, they had their first “game”. This was hilarious. As you can probably imagine, often the boys would run the wrong way or pull the flags off their own team member, or even tackle the other player.
The cutest little football players ever. I hope when Evan starts playing football that their games are at two different times. How could I ever choose who to watch?
The kids got to play a second game – notice their jerseys are now blue.
Finally, this video was from when they first got started. Cayden didn’t know yet what to do with the ball when he got it. I told his mom that she’ll have to keep this handy because when he’s drafted into the NFL they’re going to want to see some good childhood footage of his football days.
All in all, it was a great afternoon, the sun was out, and this adds another memory to my memory bank. Even Lily got to enjoy the sun and football. Her mom’s slacking though – she needs a Seahawks sweater.
