I think my daughter thought I was exaggerating when I told her how high the grass was in the back yard. Our Chihuahuas have literally been getting lost in the weeds. I have not been concerned this spring with doing anything to mow it down until time to get ready for the major overhaul I’ve been saving and planning for. The plan is that the landscapers are going to come in and shave off about 3” from the top of the so-called yard and start over, install proper drainage and gravel, adequate top soil, top it all off with sod, and expand the concrete patio. It was never landscaped right in the first place, has very poor drainage, and is a completely unusable space save for a dog run that I don’t take care of. It’s embarrassing and I’m over it. It’s time for me to have a nice backyard that I can sit in and enjoy – whether by myself, with a special someone I’ve yet to meet, or with a whole group of friends.
Today, Cindy, Cody, and the boys decided to surprise me and come down and spend the day with me. This was as much for them to get a change of scenery and a place for the boys to play (they’re in limbo between a rental and buying their home) as it was to help me with the yard. Still, it was a great day. I enjoyed their company, and we got a LOT done.
I forgot to take a good “before” picture, but I think there’s enough here that you get the idea.
Cindy firing up the weed whacker
A bit of the “before”. The grass literally came up to Cindy’s hips. And she’s 5’ 10”. Sheesh.
This was after Cody tore down two holly bushes that we rescued from some place about six years ago. I think Cayden was a baby then.
Progress
Dug, their pup, on the other side watching and waiting. Such a good doggie.
Some Columbine and other plants I “rescued” from one of my flower beds. You can see my helper in the background.
I realized later what Evan was doing was looking for slugs. Lord knows, there’s plenty all over our yard. He was catching them and “releasing” them over the fence. Cracks me up, that boy does.
Some more rescued plants
And the “after”. This is the northwest side of the house and the side where I’ll be putting most of the work in, although both sides will get new a new yard.
Looking on the same side of the house but this is toward the greenbelt.
All totaled, we filled up the green bin and much more, pulled out three flower beds and associated edgers, and transplanted about a dozen nice plants into pots to save for the new yard landscaping.
Not bad for a day’s work.
