I forgot how much I enjoyed Project Runway until I saw the premier. And Tim Gunn? He’s just a class act all the way around.
Gosh, there was just so much going on with this episode that it’s taken me forever a while to gather my thoughts together (aside from stopping daily life so I could write them out).
This episode’s challenge was to design a red-carpet dress – for any red carpet event, Emmy, Oscar, MTV, whatever. Not very original, I thought – in fact, it reeked of unoriginality since just before this episode, the All Star Challenge included a focus on a red-carpet outfit. At least they didn’t have to design something from a grocery store shopping trip or, as in the All Star Challenge, act like maniacs destroying a lovely restaurant for sewing materials. I always felt those wacky challenges were a bit too over-the-top, but then again, they’ve resulted in some cool designs.
But what’s this? There’s a Seattle designer in the cast! So, since I’m from the Seattle area, let’s start with Logan Neitzel, shall we? First off – one of his favorite PR designer was Jeffrey Sebelia? What-ev. We’ll try to overlook that particular bit of bad taste.
Seriously? That’s it? Maybe all the Seattle rain has just burned the color gray into his eyeballs and he couldn’t see anything else. That’s just so boring and unimaginative. Way to represent, dude. Fail. I hope future designs show a bit more creativity – and color.
Ari Fish aka Miss “My name is really Samantha Ronson and I’m Lindsay’s Ex”.
Seriously – I wonder if that totally freaked out Lindsay Lohan when she came out to do the judging.
“What if you don’t sketch?” Are you kidding me? Clearly the producers edited out this girl’s sketching time but how does the sketch correlate to the hideousness that she put on that poor girl. My granddaughter could quilt hexagons better than this. The shorts are sort of cute, but they’re overshadowed by that monstrosity on top. Ari’s heart really wasn’t in it, as evidenced by her parting statement, “Someone’s got to be the first to go. Who better to go than me?” She should stick to cooking. Maybe.
This was the winner – Christopher Straub. Everyone’s oohing and aahing over this but I really don’t see anything innovative or fresh about this design. Seems to me it’s been done a gazillion times. Although, I do like the fabric (but not the color) that the lower ruffles were done in.
The following are some honorable mentions that I really liked based purely on my own personal tastes and nothing more. (I’m too tired to look up who’s design is whose, so you can see for yourself here.)
I love the lace top and the low back. I I’d love to see it in a deep jewel tone, maybe a deep teal but not ruby red, something unusual. I bet it would rock then. Some in the blogosphere have criticized the tie but I don’t find it offensive.
These two were cute little sassy numbers. Too bad the styling on this first one had the wild hair covering up most of the upper portion of the dress. It was hard to see what was going on.
Not so sure about the jacket thing going on here, but I could see myself in this one – especially for a sexy holiday dress with that splash of bling on the back as I’m sashaying away, leaving the guys wishing they’d asked ME for a date. Hahahaha.
And in the Fugly category, we have the following. I think they all speak for themselves.
I’ll try to be more on the ball with future recaps. Later!
