The only thing that anyone here has been talking about for the last couple days has been the snow in Western Washington. The news stations are talking longer and preempting other shows, people are on Facebook and Twitter more sharing pictures and anecdotes, and everyone is either loving the snow or hating it. And most everyone is acting like this is the first time Seattle has ever had this amount of snow. And every year it’s the same story.
Where I live we got about 8 to 10 inches of snow over the last 24-48 hours. A lot even for here, but we’re not unused to snow. I only dug out pictures from the last couple of years, but my memory – unless mine is failing me, and that’s quite possible – is that we’ve had snow over the past decade or longer more often than we have not. We had a bad snow storm in 2008, another in 1995 or 1996. So, it’s not like we don’t know what to do or how to drive. Particularly how to drive in the snow.
It is what it is. C’mon peeps. Relax. Enjoy the snow. Play like a kid and throw some snowballs, build a snowman or a snow fort. The great thing about snow in Seattle is typically (except for the two-week Snowmageddon in 2008) it’s gone in three days, and doesn’t stick around for three months.
Me, I don’t mind it any more. I’m used to it. I actually like it and welcome the chance to stay home and stop running so damn fast everywhere. I can snuggle under my blankets and hibernate, just a little. I like cozy. I like snow. I also like when the snow goes away. But until it does, I enjoy the beauty and the stillness of it.

In Seattle, when the sun comes out, it’s a novelty. Particularly this year because it’s almost the end of July and we are just now starting to have temperatures cresting around 80F. Since the sun is such a rare occurrence around here, I suppose I could – almost – forgive all the multitudes of fashion faux-pas that burned my retinas yesterday. I really wish I had more time to snoop photograph some of them, but also some of them would have not been suitable for work (or family). Maybe next time. Instead, I’ll inundate you with cute pictures of my grandkids.
Sunday afternoon my youngest daughter, Stacy, and I took the kids to Mulkilteo, WA. It was crowded. (Have I ever mentioned I don’t like crowds? I always feel like I’m being stared at. Truth is, I’m staring at everyone else. Ha!) We meandered down to the water where I started off telling the boys they could only get into the water up to their ankles. What was I thinking? That’s like torture to a little boy at the beach. I remembered I had extra shorts in the car, so the tops came off and the shorts turned into swim trunks. Poor Evan. He has no butt and is so skinny (but eats like a bottomless pit) that his shorts kept falling off him like a little old man with no belt. Laila absolutely loves water and I give her mommy credit for this and getting her used to water from a very early age. Hopefully she can get her in some swim lessons when she gets a bit bigger.

Cayden loved playing with this huge piece of floating driftwood. (Is that redundant? Floating driftwood…just the editor in me surfacing…punny….)

Laila getting her feet wet.

Hey…where’d the water go?

I can’t wait for another sunny day so I can take them again and to a less crowded place and when we can stay longer (and have a blanket and towels to sit on.)
Ah… sun.
